Saint Bernard Samson

Bernhardin Samson (lived in the 16th century, exact dates of birth and death are not known) was a Franciscan and known in Switzerland as an indulgence preacher .

Life dates

On November 15, 1517, Samson received a papal brief to preach for the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Switzerland. In 1518 he traveled via Ticino to Switzerland and via central Switzerland to Bern , Friborg and Solothurn . In 1519 he came to the region of the then diocese of Constance .

Because of the content of his sermons he had opponents in the vicar general of the diocese of Constance Johannes Fabri and the later reformer Ulrich Zwingli . After the Diet had submitted its objections to Samson to Pope Leo X , he was recalled to Rome on April 30, 1519. From then on he disappears from history.
