Mário Batista
Mário Batista , fighting name Bersama ( Indonesian together ), is an East Timorese soldier in the National Defense Forces (F-FDTL) and former freedom fighter. He currently has the rank of major (as of 2020).
After the Kraras massacre, Bersama joined the FALINTIL guerrillas as a boy , which fought against the Indonesian occupiers. He had only attended two classes at the Indonesian school. During the resistance he learned to write in Portuguese . Commandant Taur Matan Ruak gave Bersama the task of copying the reports because his handwriting was beautiful.
After the war, Bersama was the first East Timorese student at the Australian Military Academy and completed a course for officers in high command in China, where he came third among participants from 43 countries.
Bersama received leading positions in the F-FDTL. In 2012 he was Chief of Staff of Defense Forces Commanding Lere Anan Timor .
