The COVID-19 pandemic has occurred in Abkhazia since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that started in China in December 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic .

In Abkhazia, even before the first case of a Covid-19 pandemic occurred there, all major events to avoid a COVID-19 pandemic were canceled and the disinfection of public transport increased. Border controls were tightened, except for the borders with Russia, which remained open. The presidential elections, which were scheduled for March 22, 2020, were not canceled.

Foreign support

After a two-day meeting with representatives of the WHO on March 18, 2020, 500 copies of protective clothing , 600 liters of antiseptic liquid and around 500 liters of antibacterial soap were handed over. On April 17, 2020, 3 cases of COVID-19 were registered. Russia handed over a significant amount of medical items, protective clothing and disinfectants on April 17, and in May 2020 Russia sent 26 ventilators and 500 COVID-19 test kits.
