COVID-19 pandemic in Burundi

The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Burundi since the end of March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

Entrants from countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic had to go into quarantine for 14 days from March 12, 2020. Around March 20, Bujumbura Airport was closed, as were the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo . For a long time inland there were no restrictions. Football games and family celebrations continued to take place. The campaign for the presidential election on May 20 was not interrupted. On March 31, Burundi's Minister of Health, Thadée Ndikumana, reported the first two positive people who had returned from Rwanda and the United Arab Emirates . These two cases also appeared in the WHO situation report for the first time on April 1, 2020. On April 2nd, another positive case was confirmed and 22 other people tested negative.

On April 8, 675 people were in quarantine in Burundi.

As of April 14, 2020, the WHO had confirmed five COVID-19 infections in Burundi.
