Situation in the country
Somalia is in a protracted military conflict. The central government has no control over large parts of the country and is in conflict with several regional governments. Some rural areas in the south are dominated by the Al-Shabaab terrorist group , which has hindered humanitarian work in the country in the past. Poverty and hunger are widespread in Somalia, making people prone to infection and the country prone to a pandemic outbreak.
Somalia's health infrastructure is weak: the country ranks 194 out of 195 in the Global Health Security Index . The country has fewer than 20 intensive care beds.
Mohamed Mohamud Ali, chairman of the Somali Medical Association, warned in March that the virus could kill many more people in Somalia than in China or Iran, as there are no test kits in the country and patients have to wait at least three days for results to obtain.
Al-Shabaab militia leaders met in the country to discuss COVID-19. Action Against Hunger's Ahmed Khalif warned that the extremist group had blocked access to humanitarian aid workers in Somalia in the past but could potentially allow people to move to another location for treatment.
Twenty doctors from Somali National University voluntarily went to Italy, which was badly hit by the pandemic, to fight the COVID-19 outbreak.
