COVID-19 pandemic in Uruguay

The COVID-19 pandemic has occurred in Uruguay since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in China in December 2019. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

On March 13, 2020, the first COVID-19 case in Uruguay was confirmed by the national Ministry of Health . In the WHO situation reports, four cases from Uruguay first appeared on March 16, 2020.

As of April 9, 2020, 473 confirmed infections and 7 deaths had been reported from the South American country. The government had previously imposed exit restrictions and postponed elections. The Supreme Court said that except for the most urgent cases, trials would be suspended. On April 8, it was announced that as of April 22, classes would resume in 973 schools in the country.

As of April 22, 2020, the WHO confirmed 535 COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths from Uruguay.
