On March 6, flights to Lagos (Nigeria), Porto Alegre (Brazil) and Washington DC (USA) were also suspended. On March 17th, Cabo Verde Airlines canceled all other routes in accordance with the government decision.

On March 20, 2020, the first COVID-19 disease was confirmed in Cape Verde. This case first appeared in the WHO situation report on March 21, 2020. Two more cases were confirmed on March 21. These two cases, and the previous one, each involved tourists who stayed on Boa Vista Island before testing positive.

Since March 16, 2020, tests have been carried out in Cape Verde and not abroad by the Laboratório de Virologia de Cabo Verde in Praia.

On March 17, 2020, as an emergency measure, the Prime Minister announced the suspension of all incoming flights from the US, Brazil, Senegal, Nigeria, Portugal and all affected European countries. This regulation was valid for three weeks. Exceptions were made for cargo flights and flights for foreign nationals wishing to return home. Restrictions have also been imposed on the docking of cruise ships, sailing ships and the landing of passengers or crew members of cargo ships or fishing vessels. Further measures were taken the day after.

A fourth case was confirmed on March 25th. It was a citizen who had returned from Europe. This was the first case to be discovered in the country's capital, Praia, on the island of Santiago. The following day, March 26, the Cape Verde Minister of Health announced that the man's wife had also tested positive and that the first local transmission was taking place.

The first COVID-19-related death in the country occurred on March 24, 2020. This fatality first appeared in the WHO Situation Report on March 28, 2020. As of April 19, 2020, the WHO confirmed 55 cases of COVID-19 and one death caused by COVID-19 in Cape Verde.

The state of emergency on the particularly affected island of Santiago is still declared.

On June 7th, the measures were tightened again and the state of emergency was reintroduced on the islands of Sal and Boa Vista in addition to the island of Santiago.

The travel warning remained in place in July. There is no indication that this will change. As of July 23, 2020, 2,154 people had been infected with the coronavirus in the country.
