COVID-19 pandemic in Togo
The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Togo since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.
Course and measures
On March 6, 2020, the Togolese authorities confirmed the first COVID-19 infection in the country. It was a Togolese woman who traveled to Germany, France, Turkey and Benin before returning to Togo. That day it was also reported that she was isolated and that her condition was stable. This case first appeared in the WHO situation report on March 7, 2020.
After an extraordinary council of ministers on March 16, 2020, the government announced that it would set up a 2 billion fund in local currency to fight the pandemic. They also decided to take the following measures: a suspension of flights from Italy, France, Germany and Spain; A cancellation of all international events for three weeks; An isolation of people who have recently been in a high risk country in their respective homes; A closure of the borders from March 21; A ban on events with more than 100 people effective March 19.
In accordance with the ban on large gatherings, the Togolese Football Association suspended all competitions from March 18. Other events have also been canceled, including a well-known literature festival.
On March 20, nine more cases were confirmed in Togo. On that day, the Ministry of Health reported the first person to be cured in the country.
Seven more cases were confirmed on March 21. To curb the spread of the virus in Togo, all national borders were closed. The cities of Lomé, Tsévié, Kpalimé and Sokodé were quarantined for two weeks from March 20.
The first COVID-19-related death in the country occurred on March 27, 2020. This fatality first appeared in the WHO Situation Report on March 30, 2020. As of April 14, 2020, the WHO confirmed 76 COVID-19 infections and three COVID-19-related deaths in Togo.
