COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka

The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Sri Lanka since January 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

On January 27, 2020, the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Sri Lanka. This case first appeared in the WHO situation reports on January 28, 2020.

As of April 6, 2020, 176 COVID-19 cases and 5 deaths have been confirmed in Sri Lanka by the WHO.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the general curfew imposed in connection with this, the parliamentary election scheduled for April 25, 2020 could not be held. Ultimately, the election date was postponed to August 5, 2020. In addition, strict regulations were issued for the election campaign (no major events, mask requirement, hand disinfection, etc.) as well as for the actual election.
