Controversy over Covid-Organics

In April 2020, Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina praised an herbal extract developed by the local Madagascan Institute for Applied Research ( Institut Malgache de Recherches Appliquées ) as a cure for coronavirus infection and as a preventive measure. The exact composition of the extract, which was sold under the name Covid-Organics , remained unknown. An extract from annual mugwort ( Artemisia annua ) was stated as the main ingredient . Rajoelina also recommended that school children consume the herbal brew every day. The country's national medical academy ( Académie Nationale de Médecine de Madagascar , ANAMEM) opposed the recommendation. There is a risk of damage to health as long as the herbal medicine has not been adequately scientifically investigated. Since the ingredient artemisin is a basic component of malaria combination therapies, scientists have voiced the fear that regular consumption of the herbal extract could lead to the development of malaria resistance. Although there is individual evidence that artemisin could have an effect on coronavirus infection, detailed clinical tests were lacking. Despite these warnings, heads of government in other African countries showed great interest in the product. The presidents of Tanzania, John Magufuli and Chad Idriss Déby , each had an airplane load of medicine flown in from Madagascar. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo under Presidents Felix Tshisekedi and Denis Sassou-Nguesso also received an airplane shipment of medicine as a gift.
