COVID-19 pandemic in Ecuador

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The COVID-19 pandemic in Ecuador caused a health care crisis in 2020. Ecuador has about 17 million inhabitants. Over 3 million of them live in the greater Guayaquil area and almost 2 million in the capital Quito (see also list of cities in Ecuador ). Ecuador has two neighboring countries (Colombia and Peru); both are also badly affected by the pandemic ( COVID-19 pandemic in Colombia , COVID-19 pandemic in Peru ).

background

The COVID-19 pandemic began in the People's Republic of China in December 2019 . The novel respiratory disease COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group . On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the event as a global pandemic .

course

The first case was reported on February 28, 2020.

In Quito there was an extensive curfew from March 17, 2020, and across the country from March 18, 2020. Purchases of groceries, visits to the doctor, etc. were excluded.

On April 9, 2020, the media reported: “In the port city of Guayaquil , the coffins are running out. Many corpses are lying on the open street and are only covered with cloths. ”By April 11, 2020, a total of 1,878 deaths had been found there. According to Jorge Wated, chairman of the Ecuadorian crisis team, a count on April 12, 2020 showed that 771 bodies were recovered from houses by a special unit within three weeks. In addition, the hospitals, whose morgues were full, were relieved by the removal of another 631 bodies. These numbers are in stark contrast to the officially only 333 deaths in Ecuador. Although the cause of death was not stated, the numerous bodies are apparently connected to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially since Wated had already estimated at the beginning of April, i.e. during the rescue, that "in the province of Guayas alone between 2500 and 3500 deaths related to Covid-19 will occur. ”According to official figures, 4000 of the country's 7,500 cases of infection had been reported from the city as of April 13.

According to a media report on April 4, 2020, there was a lack of equipment and medicines in Ecuador. There was also a lack of tests, which is why there was a high number of unreported cases. 1600 of the 3747 infected people registered at the time work in hospitals. Some of the dead were burned privately. Another indicator of a high number of unreported cases was the significantly increased mortality. In Guayas Province, around 2,000 people typically die each month. In 2020, on March 15, there were already 14,561 deaths instead of the expected 5,000.

From the beginning of May to mid-May 2020, the number of infected people was corrected downwards three times (see statistics). On the other hand, investigations into questionable deaths have started. In the WHO report of May 11, 2020 (No. 113), 410 deaths identified by follow-up examinations were added, and the WHO report of the following day (No. 114) also announced that there were a further 1,486 "possible deaths" that were still being investigated would.

activities

International air traffic to Ecuador ceased on March 17, 2020. Domestic flights have also been discontinued and local public transport has been greatly reduced.

Since March 17, 2020, there has been a curfew for non-essential matters in Quito - and in the rest of the country since March 18. This excludes purchases of groceries, visits to the doctor, etc. From 2 pm to 5 am there was an absolute curfew in all of Ecuador.

As of August 12, 2020, the general closure of the borders continued. Upon entry, a 14-day quarantine obligation applies, which must generally be fulfilled in certain hotels. Further restrictions vary from canton to canton and are stipulated in stages.

Remarks

  1. a b c d Since August 17, 2020, the WHO reports have only been published weekly; they contain additional information (around cases per million inhabitants). The last daily WHO report ( No. 209 , pdf) was published on August 16, 2020.
  2. a b c d e f g h This lists cases that have been reported to WHO by national authorities. Since this is a dynamic situation, there may be discrepancies or delays between the cases of the WHO and the data of national authorities as well as the information provided by other bodies such as Johns Hopkins University (CSSE).
  3. a b c d Apparently due to the changeover of the recording time from 10 a.m. CET to 0 a.m. CET, the information in WHO report No. 57 and No. 58 is identical and therefore the report of March 18 was not taken into account here, in order to double count of newly infected as well as daily deaths.
  4. a b c d Obviously, days were summarized several times and cases added, which falsifies the meaningfulness of the diagram view.
  5. a b The high increase in WHO report No. 96 of April 25, 2020 (pdf) is probably explained by an addendum, but is not explained in the report itself.
  6. In the WHO report of May 7th, the government of Ecuador incorporated a correction, which reduced the total number of infected people by 2,461. The same thing happened in the May 10 report, which withdrew 1,480 cases, and the May 12 report, which withdrew 50 cases.
  7. a b c d In the WHO report of May 28, 2020 ( No. 129 , pdf) 301 infected people and 18 deaths were subsequently included.
  8. In the WHO report of June 23, 2020 (as was often the case before) there was no new report. In the report of June 24, there were 1,003 more infected people (51,643 after 50,640), but according to the report only 728 more. The 1.003 is therefore specified here. The difference in the number of deaths in the report (see there) was similarly different.
  9. a b The report of deaths between April 2nd and 4th is obviously incorrect. In the report of April 1st ( WHO # 72 , pdf) it is 75. In the report of April 2nd ( WHO # 73 , pdf) it is given almost doubled to 146. In the reports of April 4th and 5th ( WHO # 74 , WHO # 75 , each pdf) it is 120, in the report of April 5th (pdf) it rises again by leaps and bounds to 172, so that the 71 dead apparently an error message are.
  10. The recovery of 1,402 bodies from Guayaquil, which was reported on April 12, 2020, was not taken into account. Other evidence also suggests significantly higher death rates. For more information see history.
  11. a b In the WHO report of May 11, the deaths were corrected by including 410 clinically and epidemiologically examined cases that have now been closed .
  12. In the WHO report of June 23, 2020 (as was often the case before) there was no new report. In the report of June 24th there were 51 more deaths (4,274 after 4,223), but according to the report only 28 more. Therefore 51 is given here. The difference in the number of infected people in the report (see there) was similarly different.

  16. a b c d As of August 16, 2020, the daily announcement of the figures was changed to a weekly rhythm. The numbers of the first weekly report ( August 17, 2020 , pdf) are identical to those of the WHO report No. 209 (August 16, 2020, pdf) and are also based on the status of August 16, 2020 at 10 a.m. after the report itself is shown . They can therefore be continued seamlessly from the second weekly report ( August 24, 2020 , pdf), as this was announced accordingly at 10 a.m. on August 23, 2020. In order not to make this too confusing, the date of the publication (August 24th) is not used here for the database (August 23rd).
