COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh

The COVID-19 pandemic is occurring in Bangladesh as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in China in December 2019. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

On February 1, 2020, 312 Bangladeshi nationals were flown out of Wuhan. Most of them were students and PhD students or their family members. The returnees were extensively tested and quarantined, none of which tested positive.

On March 8, 2020, the first COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Bangladesh. They were two people who had returned from Italy and a family member. These cases first appeared in the WHO situation reports on March 9, 2020. On March 20, 2020, the first curfew related to the pandemic was imposed in the Madaripur district .

More than 100 infected people were reported on April 6, 2020, a week later, on April 13, over 1,000 and another three weeks later, on May 3, over 10,000 infected people. This number had already doubled on May 14, and a week later (May 21) there were over 30,000 infected people. The first death occurred in mid-March 2020, in mid-April there were over 100, and on 25 May 2020 over 500 deaths.
