The COVID-19 pandemic on Réunion began on March 11, 2020 with the first COVID-19 infection. The first death was announced on May 20, 2020 and on May 23, 2020 451 COVID-19 infections were counted, including 3 new infections.

The pandemic is part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that started in China in December 2019. It affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Réunion is an island with around 850,000 inhabitants, located in the Indian Ocean and politically forming an overseas department and a region of France, it belongs to the European Union . This overseas department is a local authority that is subject to the instructions of the respective President of France. In the event of a pandemic, this currently means (2020) that the incumbent Prefect of Réunion, as the representative of the central French state, has to obey the decrees of French President Emmanuel Macron .

On March 15, Macron issued a lockdown by decree , which was implemented by the Prefect Jacques Billant: All airports and seaports, all restaurants, bars and schools had to close. Only necessary errands for subsistence were allowed.

On April 1, the ban on selling alcohol followed until further notice after 5 p.m. and all shops and supermarkets had to close at 7 p.m. on April 10.

The lockdown was eased from May 11th, shops and beaches could be reopened, while restaurants and bars remained closed. The wearing of nose and mouth masks became compulsory in public. All people arriving in Réunion have to go into a 14-day quarantine .

All schools on Réunion reopened on May 18th.
