COVID-19 pandemic in Gambia

The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Gambia since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

The first case of COVID-19 in the Gambia was reported on March 17th and treated in the MRC department of the Gambia specialist clinic in Fajara.

On the same day, the Gambian government imposed a 14-day quarantine obligation for travelers from risk areas after entry.

On March 19, flights from 13 particularly hard hit countries were suspended. These included 1. United Kingdom 2. Spain 3. France 4. Poland 5. Germany 6. Sweden 7. Denmark 8. Switzerland 9. Netherlands 10. Norway 11. Austria 12. Belgium 13 Portugal.

On March 24, 2020, the Gambian government largely closed its land border with Senegal and its airspace for at least 21 days. However, according to the current status, flights to bring tourists back are still possible in individual cases.

The state of emergency in Gambia has been in effect since March 27, 2020. Restaurants, bars, places of worship, and shops are closed, but grocery stores will remain open. Public transport is only allowed to take half of the basically permitted number of passengers, the same applies to taxis and private vehicles. There is also a ban on gathering for more than five people.

As of April 1, 2020, there are 1 infected case and one death. 2 infected people were cured by April 1st.

Due to the limited testing capacity, tests are only arranged by appointment and are organized via a telephone number for a specialist from the Ministry of Health.
