The COVID-19 pandemic in Guyana began on March 12, 2020. Guyana is a small state in South America bordering Brazil to the south and west , Venezuela to the northwest, and Suriname to the east . As of April 25, 2020, a total of 74 infected people and 8 deaths had been reported in the Guyana pandemic.

The pandemic is part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that started in China in December 2019 . The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Guyana, a state with around 800,000 inhabitants, found itself in a political crisis in March, because after the election on March 2nd there was still no official result even three weeks after the election. In the second poorest country in South America, huge oil reserves had been discovered before the election and the dispute over it had overshadowed the incipient corona crisis.

On March 10, 2020, a 52-year-old Guy from the United States who arrived from the United States on March 5, visited a doctor and was proven to have died of a COVID-19 infection shortly afterwards on March 12. As a result, the President of Guyana, David Granger , announced the first case of infection in his country.

From March 18, 2020, all airports in Guyana were closed to arriving aircraft for 14 days until further notice and all schools were closed. The Ministry of Health of Guyana instructed all residents that they must be in their homes from March 30th and that only essential purchases are possible at specified times. On April 2, 2020, President David Granger extended the lockdown for bars, restaurants and other events from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. the next morning.

From April 8, it became known that all post offices would be closed until further notice.

As of April 25, 2020, a total of 74 infected people and 8 deaths had been reported in Guyana. The highest number of infections were 7 new cases on April 15th. The data available so far show a mortality rate of 10.8% on April 25, which should be significantly higher when other factors are taken into account.

Help from abroad

On April 9, 2020, the European Union announced that it would transfer an aid payment of 8.6 million US dollars to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in the fight to deal with the corona crisis. Guyana is one of the 24 members of CARPHA.

Guyana received 30,000 respirators and fans from China .
