COVID-19 pandemic in Mauritania

The COVID-19 pandemic has been occurring in Mauritania since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in China in December 2019. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

On March 13, 2020, the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Mauritania. This first case was confirmed by the WHO on March 15th. On March 18, the Mauritanian health minister announced the second positive coronavirus case in the country. The person arrived in the country ten days before the discovery. A third coronavirus case was reported on March 26th. It was a Mauritanian citizen who had returned to Mauritania from France on March 15.

On March 30, 2020, the country recorded the first COVID-19-related death.

According to the Mauritanian authorities, there was no active case from April 18, 2020 to May 1, 2020. It was thus one of the countries that had no active case after confirmed infections.

However, on May 1, 2020, a new case of COVID-19 was confirmed by the WHO.

As of May 3, 2020, there are 8 confirmed cases in Mauritania, 6 of which have recovered and one person has died.
