Economic situation for the population - famine

The 2020 economic crisis caused by the pandemic led to a further deterioration in the Syrian economy, which had been in crisis since 2011 even before the pandemic caused by the civil war . This combination of crises led to an increase in Syrian food prices of around 200 percent within a year by June 2020. In the course of the pandemic, the price of bread rose to 203 Syrian lira by the beginning of May 2020 (which in turn recorded a 3.5-fold loss in value in the first half of 2020). In May 2020, the price of bread rose again by the beginning of June 2020, by 31 percent to 294 Syrian pounds. Rice became 39 percent more expensive. The price of sugar rose by about 122 percent. According to Welthungerhilfe, before the pandemic there were around nine million Syrians who were exposed to famine , the number of starving people in Syria rose to around 10.4 million as a result of the corona pandemic.

Aid measures by the international community

At an international donor conference for Syria refugees, states pledged financial aid totaling 6.9 billion euros. Of the aid money, 2.3 billion euros come from states of the European Union (of which almost 1.6 billion euros from Germany ). Of the 6.9 billion euros, 4.9 billion euros are earmarked for 2020, announced the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Protection , Janez Lenarčič .
