COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya

The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Kenya since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

On March 13, 2020, the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Kenya. This case first appeared in the WHO situation reports on March 14, 2020.

As a result, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced numerous restrictions. International air traffic for passengers was discontinued. The day after, riots broke out. Employers were asked to let employees work from home whenever possible. In return, were VAT (sales tax) and the income tax cut. An aid package of over a billion US dollars was requested from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to alleviate the consequences of the crisis. Nevertheless, many employees were given leave of absence without payment of their wages; Casual workers and street vendors lost their sources of income. Thousands of commuters who did not adhere to the curfew were shot at with tear gas by police officers in Mombasa and, according to the media, they were also beaten.

As of April 6, 2020, 142 COVID-19 cases and four deaths had been confirmed in Kenya by the WHO.
