COVID-19 pandemic in Honduras

The COVID-19 pandemic has occurred in Honduras since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in China in December 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic .

On March 11, 2020, the Honduras Ministry of Health announced that two incoming women tested positive for COVID-19 on March 10 . It was a 42-year-old woman who landed at Toncontin International Airport after a flight from Madrid in Spain and a 37-year-old woman who landed at Ramón Villeda Morales Airport in Honduras after a flight from Geneva , Switzerland .

The external borders of Honduras have been closed and there are only a few commercial flights. A general curfew has been imposed on Honduras until further notice until May 17, 2020.

Former Health Minister Elsa Palou, an infectiologist, assumed towards the end of March 2020 that more than 5000 people in Honduras had been infected with COVID-19. Because tests would not stop and therefore only 67 infections were officially confirmed at the end of March. Another criticism is that while the police and military police have been provided with sufficient protective clothing, this is not the case with medical personnel.

As of May 17, 2020, 2565 COVID-19 infections were reported in a country of around 9 million nationals, including 138 deaths.

On June 17, it was announced that President Juan Orlando Hernández and the First Lady have also tested positive for the virus.
