COVID-19 pandemic in Mali

The COVID-19 pandemic has been occurring in Mali since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that started in China in December 2019. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

As early as March 18, 2020, President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita suspended flights from affected countries, closed schools and banned large public gatherings. The planned elections in March to April, which had already been postponed several times due to the poor security situation in the country, should, however, continue to take place as planned.

On March 25, 2020, the first two COVID-19 infections were confirmed in Mali. In the WHO Situation Report, these two cases first appeared on March 26, 2020.

On March 26, 2020, the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs registered two new cases. To combat the epidemic that had spared the country so far, the President of the Republic of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Kéïta, declared a state of emergency and initiated a curfew from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. On March 27, the number of positive cases increased from seven more cases in Mali to eleven infections. Seven new cases were confirmed on March 28, bringing the total to 18.

As of March 31, 25 cases had tested positive and the first two COVID-19-related deaths were recorded. The first three deaths appeared for the first time in the WHO situation report on April 3, 2020. As of April 15, 2020, the WHO had confirmed 123 COVID-19 infections and ten COVID-19-related deaths in Mali.
