The first documented cases of a COVID-19 pandemic in Guinea-Bissau were on March 25, 2020. Guinea-Bissau is a developing country , a small state with around 1.9 million inhabitants located on the west coast of the Atlantic and on Senegal and Guinea borders.

On May 4, 2020, Guinea-Bissau counted a total of 252 COVID-19 infections, 19 recovered cases and one death. On June 23, 2020 there were 1,556 COVID-19 infections, 19 deaths and 191 recovered.

The pandemic is part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that started in China in December 2019. It affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Domestic politics

The 2019 presidential elections have exacerbated domestic political clashes between the country's political camps. That is why there is an increased military presence in front of public buildings in the state capital Bissau and rallies and demonstrations with violent riots can occur.

In this difficult domestic political situation, Guinea-Bissau has closed all borders and suspended all flights since March 18, 2020 because of the impending COVID-19 pandemic.

The Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau, Nuno Gomes Nabiam, announced on March 25, 2020 that two cases of COVID-19 infection are in quarantine. It was a UN worker from the Congo and an Indian citizen. Nabiam then imposed a restriction on traffic between the eight regions of the country. On the same day, a state of emergency and a curfew with the exception of 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for shopping were imposed. A minimum distance of two meters to all people must be maintained and crowds of more than five people are prohibited. The citizens of Guinea-Bissau are obliged to wear a nose and mouth mask in public. On April 26, the President Umaro Sissoco Embaló extended the state of emergency until May 11, 2020.

On April 29, 2020, it was announced that Prime Minister Nabiam and three of the country's ministers tested positive for COVID-19 while they are in quarantine at a hotel in the capital, Bissau.
