Umaro Sissoco Embaló

Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embaló (born September 23, 1972 ) is a Guinea-Bissau politician. From November 18, 2016 to January 31, 2018, he was Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau. Embaló was a member of the PAIGC .

In December 2019, he won the presidential election in the second ballot as a candidate for the PAIGC spin-off Madem G15 . He has been President of Guinea-Bissau since February 27, 2020.

career

Embaló was appointed Brigadier General and Minister in 2012.

After studying in Lisbon and Madrid, he obtained his doctorate in international relations in the latter city. Embaló is fluent in Portuguese , Spanish , French , Arabic and Swahili .

The presidential election in Guinea-Bissau on November 24th / 29th December 2019 Embaló won the runoff election with 54% against Domingos Simões Pereira after being behind in the first ballot.

Embaló swore himself in on February 27, 2020 after a political and judicial dispute over the elections on December 29, 2019 had not been resolved. When he took office, he was supported by former President José Mário Vaz . After he was sworn in, the National Assembly proclaimed Cipriano Cassamá (PAIGC) as counter-president, who, however, resigned two days later. Even Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam , appointed by Embaló, was not approved by parliament.
