Alamara Nhassé

Alamara Ntchia Nhassé (born June 2, 1957 ) was Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau from 2001 to 2002 .

Political career

Nhassé is an agricultural expert and was trained in Cuba and the Soviet Union .

He belongs to the Partido para a Renovação Social (PRS) party of President Kumba Ialá , who held office from 2000 to 2003. Initially, Nhassé was Minister of Agriculture. After Artur Sanhá's dismissal on August 29, 2001, he became Minister of the Interior in the government of Faustino Imbali . After Imbali's dismissal by the president, he took over the office of prime minister on December 9, 2001. On January 15, 2002, a PRS congress elected him president of the party with 339 of 567 votes. A new government crisis ended his term of office and led to the dissolution of parliament. On November 17, 2002, Mário Pires , also PRS, was appointed by the president as the new head of government. On November 25, 2002, Nhassé resigned as party chairman.

In June 2005, he supported João Bernardo Vieira's candidacy in the presidential elections. After his election victory, Nhassé called for the resignation of the government of Carlos Gomes Júnior in September 2005 , who a few weeks later lost his parliamentary base with the departure of 14 of the 45 MPs of his PAIGC party . Since the appointment of Aristides Gomes as Prime Minister by President Vieira in early November 2005, the PRS has been represented by five ministers in the government.
