Presidential decree of August 20, 2015 appointing Baciro Djá as Prime Minister

Djá became Minister of Defense in the second cabinet of Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Júnior in 2011 and also held this ministerial post in the interim cabinet of Prime Minister Adiato Diallo Nandigna until 2012 .

On March 18, 2012, he applied as an independent candidate in the first round of the presidential election to succeed President Malam Bacai Sanhá, who died on January 9, 2012 . In this first ballot he finished fifth out of 17 candidates with 10,298 votes (3.26 percent) and was thus behind the candidate of the ruling Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC), Carlos Gomes Júnior (154,797 votes, 48th vote) , 97 percent) and the applicant of the Partido para a Renovação Social (PRS), Kumba Ialá (73,842 votes, 23.36 percent) as well as Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo (49,767 votes, 15.74 percent) and Henrique Pereira Rosa (17,070 votes, 5th , 40 percent), both of whom also ran as independents. A second round was prevented by a military coup so that the elections could not lead to a democratic decision on the presidency.

As the successor to Domingos Simões Pereira , Djá was appointed Prime Minister for the first time on August 20, 2015 by President José Mário Vaz and held this office until he was succeeded by Carlos Correia on September 17, 2015, who then formed his fourth government. On May 27, 2016, Djá again succeeded Correia as prime minister and then formed his second cabinet. He remained in office until November 18, 2016 and was then replaced by Umaro Sissoco Embaló .
