Domingos Simões Pereira (born October 20, 1963 in Farim , Portuguese Guinea ) is a politician from Guinea-Bissau of the Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC), who was among other things Secretary General of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries from 2008 to 2012 and was Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau between 2014 and 2015 . Since February 9, 2014 he has been chairman of the PAIGC.

Life

Pereira worked as an engineer after graduating . He became Minister for Social Infrastructure (Ministro das Infraestruturas Sociais) in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Mário Pires in 2002 and held this ministerial post until 2003. In the government of Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Júnior he held the post of Minister for Public Works (Ministro das Obras Públicas) .

As successor to Luís de Matos Monteiro da Fonseca , he became General Secretary of the Community of Portuguese- Speaking Countries CPLP (Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa) in July 2008 and held this position until he was replaced by Murade Issac Murargy in September 2012. For his services there he was appointed Grand Cross of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique on July 30, 2012 . On February 9, 2014, he succeeded Carlos Gomes Júnior as chairman of the Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC).

On July 4, 2014, Pereira replaced Rui Duarte de Barros as prime minister and held this office until August 20, 2015. President José Mário Vaz then appointed former defense minister Baciro Djá as his successor .

The presidential election in Guinea-Bissau on November 24th / 29th December 2019 he lost in the second ballot against his opponent Umaro Sissoco Embaló .
