Raimundo Pereira

Raimundo Pereira (born August 28, 1956 ) is a lawyer and politician from Guinea-Bissau and has been President of the National Assembly since 2008 .

Political career

The lawyer trained at the University of Lisbon and member of the Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC) was elected President of the Assembleia Nacional do Povo by the army of his country on March 2, 2009 after the assassination of President João Bernardo Vieira da Guiné-Bissau - he was elected to this position on December 22, 2008 - was appointed interim president and remained in this position until December 8 of the same year, against the objection of the opposition party Partido para a Renovação Social . Pereira's task during the interim period was to organize new elections. He applied himself to the PAIGC for the candidacy for the presidency, but the preference was given to Malam Bacai Sanhá, who was elected to the presidency on July 26, 2009. After Sanhá's death on January 9, 2012, Pereira took over the presidency again provisionally. On April 12, 2012, the government was overthrown in a military coup. Pereira and former Prime Minister and winner of the first round of the presidential elections, Carlos Gomes Júnior , were arrested.
