COVID-19 pandemic in Trinidad and Tobago

The COVID-19 pandemic is occurring in Trinidad and Tobago as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in China in December 2019. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

On March 12, 2020, the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Trinidad and Tobago. It was a man who had recently been to Switzerland. He quarantined himself before symptoms of COVID-19 appeared. A contact tracing for the passengers of the flight was carried out. This case first appeared in the WHO situation reports on March 14, 2020.

On March 13, a second case of COVID-19 was registered by Trinidad and Tobago. The patient was a man with an unknown travel history. He was presented to a health facility and was soon isolated. Other people who were in contact with the infected person were also quarantined. Two other cases were confirmed on the night of March 15. A fifth case was confirmed on March 16. On March 17 and 19, two more infections were known.

On March 21st, 40 more cases were confirmed at once: Sixty-eight nationals left on March 5th for a seven-day cruise on the Caribbean Sea. After a suspected outbreak of COVID-19 on board, the Costa Favolosa had to anchor off the coast of Guadeloupe for several days. The nationals returned to Trinidad and Tobago on a charter flight from Guadeloupe on March 17. They were immediately tested at Piarco International Airport and later transferred to a quarantine facility. On March 21, it was confirmed that 40 of the 68 people quarantined tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 49.

The first two COVID-19-related deaths occurred in Trinidad and Tobago on March 25 and 26, 2020.

As of April 5, 797 tests had been done, 104 of which were positive. By then there had been seven deaths and one recovery.

As of April 13, 2020, the WHO confirmed 112 COVID-19 cases and 8 deaths in Trinidad and Tobago.

On April 15, 2020, a group of over 40 stranded citizens in Suriname was in a desperate situation. Despite multiple contacts with the consulate and state authorities, no plans were initially drawn up for their return to Trinidad and Tobago.

Health Minister Terrance Deyalsingh announced in mid-March 2020 that Trinidad and Tobago had decided to introduce restrictions on people wishing to enter from China. People who live in or have visited China are not allowed to enter Trinidad and Tobago unless they have been outside of China 14 days prior to attempting to travel to Trinidad and Tobago. Travelers whose flights are from Italy, South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Iran, Germany, Spain and France should also be prevented from entering.

On March 13, Prime Minister Keith Rowley announced that schools and universities would be closed nationwide for a week due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On March 16, Prime Minister Keith Rowley announced that the country would close its borders to everyone except Trinidad and Tobago nationals and health workers for the next 14 days. In addition, bars should be closed and the school closings that have been in effect since March 13th should be extended to April 20th. The ordered closings came into effect on March 17th at midnight.

Many Hindu associations have canceled the Phagwa, Navratri, Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti celebrations. Many other events were also canceled or postponed in March and April 2020.

Nationwide restrictions were introduced in prisons in March 2020.

On March 21, National Security Secretary Stuart Young announced the closure of all borders for everyone (including nationals and foreigners) with effect from midnight on Sunday, March 22nd. He said international flights are no longer allowed to enter the country. However, cargo ships bringing food and medicines into the country are likely to enter.

On April 6th, Prime Minister Rowley extended the restrictions until April 30th. He announced that by that date all restaurants would be closed and some businesses such as supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies and hardware would have adjusted their opening times. He also said that people should wear face masks in public and that the government would work to hand out masks.
