The COVID-19 pandemic occurs on the Seychelles since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

On March 9, 2020, the Seychelles announced a temporary closure of the islands to cruise ships ahead of the planned arrival of a Norwegian ship. Also on March 9, 2020, the Seychelles banned people from the Seychelles from entering China, South Korea, Italy and Iran. An exception was made for returning residents.

On March 14, 2020, the first two COVID-19 diseases were confirmed in the Seychelles. The two cases involved people who had been in contact with a third person in Italy who also tested positive. In the WHO Situation Report, these two cases first appeared on March 16, 2020.

A third case imported from the Netherlands to the Seychelles was confirmed on March 15. As of March 16, there were four confirmed cases. The new case also came from the Netherlands.

A man who works at the Seychelles International Airport tested positive for the novel coronavirus on April 6, 2020. This increased the total number of cases in the country to 11 sick people. After this infection became known, an order banning travel to the Seychelles came into effect at midnight on April 8, with one exception for essential service employees. This measure is to be maintained for 21 days. On April 6, two patients of the eleven confirmed cases were reported to have been healed again.

As of April 23, 2020, eleven COVID-19 diseases were confirmed in the Seychelles by the WHO. On June 28th, 50 new cases were reported and on June 29th, 16 new cases were reported.
