COVID-19 pandemic in Zimbabwe

The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Zimbabwe since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

Even before there were confirmed cases in the country, President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared a national emergency in March 2020. As a result, travel restrictions were introduced and large gatherings were banned.

On March 20, 2020, the first COVID-19 disease was confirmed in Zimbabwe. It was a man living in Victoria Falls who traveled back from Great Britain via South Africa on March 15th. This case first appeared in the WHO situation report on March 21, 2020.

The first COVID-19-related death in the country occurred on March 23, 2020. It was from the well-known Zimbabwean journalist Zororo Makamba. This fatality first appeared in the WHO situation report on March 24, 2020.

On March 23, President Mnangagwa announced additional measures: 1.) Closing the borders of Zimbabwe to all non-essential travelers, with the exception of the return of residents and cargo; 2.) Closure of bars, night clubs, cinemas, swimming pools and restriction of sporting activities; 3.) Limit all public gatherings to fewer than 50 people; 4.) Limit hospital visits to no more than one per day.

On March 27, the government announced that the country would be subject to a 21-day curfew from March 30. On April 20, it was extended by two weeks.

Due to the lack of medical protective equipment, Zimbabwean doctors filed a lawsuit against the government in early April 2020 to provide them with adequate protection when treating infected patients in the future.

As of April 19, 2020, the WHO had confirmed 25 cases of COVID-19 and three COVID-19-related deaths in Zimbabwe.

Controversy

The country's defense minister, Oppah Muchinguri, sparked controversy by talking shop that the novel coronavirus could be a divine punishment for Western nations for imposing sanctions on Zimbabwe.
