COVID-19 pandemic in Mozambique
The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Mozambique since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.
Course and measures
In March 2020, the government of Mozambique asked the population to conscientiously comply with hygiene rules. With effect from March 23, 2020, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi issued nationwide protective measures against the spread of the virus. All public and private schools were closed and gatherings of more than 50 people were prohibited. On April 1, 2020 - and thus later than in other countries - Mozambique declared a state of emergency , which is initially expected to last until April 30, 2020. Entry visas will no longer be issued during this period . Entrants were required to be in a mandatory 14-day quarantine, regardless of whether symptoms of illness were present. All public and private events were banned. However, official markets and outlets were still open between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. In public transport, as well as in motor rickshaws (locally "Txopelas"), wearing a respirator was mandatory.
Health Minister Armindo Tiago confirmed the first COVID-19 case in Mozambique on March 22, 2020. It was a Mozambican national aged 75 who had returned from a trip to the UK . As a result, he showed only mild symptoms.
As of May 22, 2020 - out of a total of 7,480 tests - 164 COVID-19 cases and no death were reported. At that time, 48 infected people in Mozambique had recovered from the disease.
