COVID-19 pandemic in Cambodia
The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Cambodia since January 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

On January 27, 2020, the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Cambodia. This case first appeared in the WHO situation reports on January 28, 2020.

Travel restrictions
- Extensive entry restrictions have been in place since March 14, 2020, especially for travelers from France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
- Since June 11th, foreigners have to leave a deposit of USD 3,000 upon entry.
Effects on public life
- Public traffic in the German embassy in Phnom Penh was temporarily suspended.
- The Cambodian government has ordered that from March 16, 2020, all schools and from March 18, 10:00 a.m., all museums, cinemas, theaters, fitness clubs and swimming pools, bars, nightclubs and KTV's (karaoke bars) must be closed . From July 4, 2020, KTV's can open for regular restaurant operations.
- Events, including religious ones, in the wats, temples and pagodas have been canceled.
- Public bus services and water taxi operations in Phnom Penh have ceased.
- From April 1 to July 4, 2020, all gambling casinos across the country were closed.
- In the course of the Cambodian New Year celebrations on April 14, 15 and 16, 2020, private trips across provincial and district borders were not allowed from April 9 to April 16, 2020 inclusive. Excluded from this rule were journeys between the province of Kandal and the capital Phnom Penh.
Observations also show:
- Skin temperature measurements and hand disinfection are taken at entrances to shopping centers and when entering larger buildings.
- Many restaurants and some hotels are closed due to a lack of customers.
- About half of all people use a face mask in a public environment.
- When entering some public facilities one is asked to use a face mask.
- Road traffic has almost halved compared to before the Corona outbreak.
As of July 10, 2020:
- Road traffic has now reached the pre-Corona level.
- Museums, fitness clubs and swimming pools, bars and nightclubs are all open, although the official permit is still missing.
Information on protective measures
In some places you can see illustrated awareness posters with information about protection against Covid 19 disease:
- Only touch the mouthguard by the rubber bands
- When coughing or sneezing, do not remove the face mask and do not use your hand
- Operate elevator buttons with your elbow
- Operate doors with your arm and do not touch door handles
- Keep a distance of two meters from each other
- Do not use stairs handrails
- Only eat your own portions
- Consume only cooked food
Furthermore:
- Police loudspeaker announcements could be heard in the inner city area, asking them to adhere to the protective measures.
- Information about Covid-19 can be heard as a dial tone during phone calls.
- A Covid-19 pandemic music video entitled "រឹងមាំ - តារាចម្រៀង ហង្ស មាស" ( Cambodia is strong ) can be seen on television (Hang Meas TV) . The broadcast appears daily and repeatedly.
Corona virus and superstition
Belief in ghosts and ghosts is widespread in Cambodia. For example, some believe the virus floats in the air above people's heads and then descends on its victims. Others swear that if you eat enough boiled eggs, you will become resistant to the virus. Still others say that the virus cannot survive in Cambodia because the sun is usually shining and it is too warm.
In the country you can occasionally see human-sized ghost dolls in front of private properties , comparable to scarecrows, so-called ting mongs , which are supposed to help keep the virus away.

The Odyssey of the cruise ship Westerdam
After an almost two-week odyssey, the cruise ship Westerdam of the cruise company Holland-America Line , with 1,455 passengers and 802 crew members on board, received permission from the Cambodian government on February 12, 2020 to head for the port of Sihanoukville and was able to do so the next day Anchor 2.5 km from the port.
The ship started on February 1 in Hong Kong and should call at ports in Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and the US suburb of Guam on the planned route, and end its voyage on February 15 in Japan (Yokohama). However, the ship was gradually turned away by these countries, only Taiwan then gave the Westerdam permission to enter a port to replenish supplies.
Initially, 20 people on board were classified as suspected cases, later examinations neither suspected nor diagnosed cases of Covid-19 were found on board.
