COVID-19 pandemic in Zambia

The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Zambia since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

By March 17, 2020, the government of Zambia had already closed all educational institutions and introduced some restrictions on international travel.

On March 18, 2020, the first two COVID-19 diseases in Zambia were confirmed in Lusaka. It was a couple who had gone to France on vacation. In the WHO Situation Report, these two cases first appeared on March 19, 2020. A third case was recorded on March 22nd. It was a man who had traveled to Pakistan and was in Lusaka on his return . According to the Zambian Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya, all three people infected up to this point were in stable health.

On March 23, 2020, the government of Zambia announced an emergency plan to contain the pandemic in the country. On March 25, 2020, President Edgar Lungu confirmed a total of 12 COVID-19 cases in the country during a live national address.

The first COVID-19-related death in the country occurred on April 2, 2020. This fatality first appeared in the WHO Situation Report on April 3, 2020. As of April 17, 2020, 48 COVID-19 cases and two COVID-19-related deaths had been confirmed in Zambia by the WHO.
