The COVID-19 pandemic has occurred in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that started in China in December 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic .

On March 10, 2020, the first Covid-19 case was registered in the city of Gazimagusa in Northern Cyprus. As of April 9, 2020, 526 Covid-19 cases and 3 deaths were registered. 104 people have recovered from Covid-19.

Government action

In January 2020, thermal imaging cameras were installed at Ercan Airport and in the ports of Northern Cyprus to screen travelers for COVID-19 infection. In order to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the local government in Northern Cyprus decreed on March 14, 2020 that a nightly lockout be imposed from March 31 from 9:00 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. the next morning which should apply until April 5th until further notice.

The Minister of Health of Northern Cyprus, Ali Pilli, announced on April 28 that quarantine had been ordered for 3,084 people since March 14, 2020, including foreigners arriving. A total of 2634 people were accommodated in hotels or student residences. 9462 people had been screened for COVID-19 by April 28, of which 108 were positive. The Turkey have supported Northern Cyprus and on 4 May 2020, Turkey sent aid to Northern Cyprus, which in particular affected by the pandemic adults and babies were distributed and 400 disabled people and children.

On May 9, 2020, the Foreign Minister of North Cyprus, Kudret Ozersay, announced that the small country had no further Covid 19 diseases and that it was now pademie-free. He attributed this to the fact that all private and public schools and public facilities, except hospitals and pharmacies, had been closed. Imposing a lockdown, closing all borders, isolation, imposing quarantine, wearing mouth and nose masks and observing distance rules would have been the means of this success.
