Live and act

Banfield studied geology at the Australian National University (1981 Bachelor, 1995 Master with Richard A. Eggleton ). In 1990 she received both a Masters and a Ph.D. from David R. Veblen at Johns Hopkins University. in geosciences. Banfield worked for the Western Mining Corporation in 1982/83 .

In 1990 she received her first professorship (Assistant Professor) at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , in 1995 she became Associate Professor , and in 1999 she was given a full professorship. She also holds professorships at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and at the University of Melbourne .

Banfield is considered a pioneer in geobiology . It was able to contribute significantly to the understanding of the microorganisms below the earth's surface (see next ). She is concerned with how microorganisms shape their environment and how the environment influences the microorganisms. She uses methods from genomics , metagenomics and community proteomics . She works on the influence of microbes on the dissolution and precipitation of minerals, on the influence on the structure, properties and reactivity of nanoparticles as well as on the ecology and evolution of microorganisms. Other fields of work are the weathering of rock and the extremophilicity of microorganisms.

According to the Scopus database, Banfield has an h-index of 104, and according to Google Scholar one of 124 (as of May 2020).
