COVID-19 pandemic in Transnistria

The COVID-19 pandemic has occurred in Transnistria since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in China in December 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic .

Location of Transnistria

The Republic of Transnistria was established between 1990 and 1992 when the Soviet Union collapsed and has a population of just under 500,000. The republic has not yet been recognized by any other state; under international law it is considered part of the Republic of Moldova .

According to the Foreign Office , Transnistria has declared a state of emergency. Foreigners are no longer allowed to enter, except for those foreigners who are resident in Transnistria as well as diplomats and representatives of international organizations. On March 13, 2020, the government of Transnistria declared a state of emergency and ordered a general quarantine as well as a ban on mass events. Protective measures were ordered for public transport, such as disinfection before departure of the lounges and vehicles in the morning, in the middle and at the end of the day. Furthermore, it was ordered on March 16 that all kindergartens, schools, colleges and universities are to be closed from March 17 to April 5. On March 18, all foreigners were banned from entering the country.

Quarantine measures have been eased for May 21, 2020. The opening of shops with separate entrances was ordered, this also applies to freestanding DIY stores. There must be the possibility of hand disinfection at the shop entrances, and contactless temperature measurement and the necessary wearing of nose face masks must be ensured by the operators of the open shops. Distance rules and the limitation of people entering the shops are based on the applicable quarantine regulations per square meter.

COVID-19 infections

On March 21, 2020, the first two cases of COVID-19 were registered in Transnistria and a total of 421 were counted by April 28, 2020. Among them were 20 dead and 36 recovered people. A total of 1000 tests for COVID-19 were carried out in two laboratories. To counteract the lack of disinfectants and protective clothing, the production of these items in Transnistria was increased significantly. As of May 18, 2020, active 791 COVID-19 cases, 360 recoveries and 32 deaths related to the COVID-19 pandemic were counted.
