COVID-19 pandemic in Pakistan

The COVID-19 pandemic has been occurring in Pakistan since February 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in China in December 2019. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

On February 26, 2020, the first two COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Pakistan. One month later (March 25) there were already over 1,000 infected people, a further month later (April 22) over 10,000 people and on May 21, 2020 more than 50,000 people infected.

The first deaths were reported on March 19, 2020, on April 14 there were already more than 100. More than 500 people had died by May 5, and the thousandth death was reported on May 20.

Testing

In August 2020 it was criticized that far too few tests are carried out in Pakistan. While there were 31,000 tests per day in June 2020 and even 41,666 on July 27, 2020, this number fell significantly afterwards. On August 3, there were only 10,759 tests left, after which the number rose again to around 20,000 tests per day. Around 2.2 million tests had been carried out by mid-August.
