The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Canada as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic on since 27 January 2020.

background

The COVID-19 pandemic began in the People's Republic of China in December 2019 . The novel respiratory disease COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group . On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the event as a global pandemic .

The first case of COVID-19 in Canada during the global pandemic was confirmed on January 27, 2020 after a man returned to Toronto from a trip to China , including Wuhan . As of March 19, 2020, 846 confirmed cases of coronavirus had been reported in Canada, with twelve deaths and eleven recoveries. As of March 18, Canada had nearly 54,000 coronavirus tests done.

Most of these cases occurred in Ontario (258 cases, 2 deaths) and British Columbia (271 cases, 8 deaths) by March 18 . Confirmed or suspected cases have been reported in every province of Canada, but none in the three northern areas as of March 18. Two patients were repatriated from the cruise ship Grand Princess . By March, all cases were linked to a previous trip to a country with a significant number of coronavirus cases. The first case of an intra-Canada transmission was confirmed in British Columbia on March 5.

After Sophie Grégoire, the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau , tested positive, both went into quarantine for 14 days as a precaution. Trudeau was the first head of government in the world to do this.

At the end of March, the province of Québec overtook the other provinces by far in terms of infections.

In the Résidence Herron retirement home in Dorval near Montréal, dozens of seniors have been dehydrated, malnourished and found in their own excrement. 31 had died as of March 2020. Most of the nurses had stopped coming to work for fear of the coronavirus. The retirement home was a luxury residence owned by the real estate company "Katasa Group", whose monthly fee is several thousand dollars per resident.

The Canadian parliament was closed for five weeks, international flights are only allowed to land at a few airports with special controls, and cruise ships with more than 500 people are no longer allowed to dock. Initially, an entry ban was waived in order not to give rise to illegal border crossings. The government urged citizens to refrain from unnecessary trips abroad and to avoid crowds by keeping their distance .

Most provinces closed schools and daycare centers, bans large gatherings, and closed various leisure and entertainment venues in mid-March. On March 16, Canada severely restricted entry options and travelers from all countries except the USA were turned away. On March 18, entries from the US were also banned by mutual agreement with the US government, with the exception of family members and key employees who commute across the border and ensure a continuous exchange of goods.

The number of tests carried out for the novel coronavirus in Canada amounted to 422,200 as of April 12, 2020.
