COVID-19 pandemic in Jamaica

The COVID-19 pandemic is occurring in Jamaica as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in China in December 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic .

Course and measures

January and February 2020

On January 31, 2020, the government ordered a travel ban between China and Jamaica. Anyone entering Jamaica will be quarantined for at least 14 days , and anyone allowed to enter and showing symptoms will be immediately isolated. Under this rule, 19 Chinese nationals who arrived at Norman Manley International Airport on the evening of January 31, 2020 were denied entry. They were quarantined and flown back to China on February 1, 2020.

March 2020

The first case of infection in Jamaica was confirmed on March 10, 2020.

All schools were closed on March 12, 2020.

Teleworking was ordered for all non-systemically important employees on March 17, 2020 .

The first death became known on March 18, 2020.

On March 19, 2020, the government quarantined Corn Piece in Hayes in Clarendon Parish .

All sea ports and airports were closed on March 21, 2020.

On March 23, 2020, the closure of the schools was extended until April 8, 2020.

April 2020

On April 1, 2020, a general curfew for the period from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. came into force.

On April 3, 2020, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that the country would receive 25 additional ventilators by May 1, 2020, bringing the number of ventilators to 105.

On April 8, 2020, the curfew and the teleworking order were extended to April 21, 2020. The wearing of protective masks was ordered for certain groups of people and strongly recommended for other Jamaicans. The school closure has been extended until April 22, 2020.

On April 14, 2020, the entire Saint Catherine Parish was placed under mass quarantine .

On April 22, 2020, a new test device went into operation at the National Public Health Laboratory that can perform more than 1,300 coronavirus tests daily. The curfew has been extended to the daytime hours (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The school closure was extended until May 31, 2020.

On April 29, 2020, the Minister of Health announced that patients with only moderate symptoms will be released from hospitals and placed under quarantine at home.

May 2020

On the night of May 3, 2020, 18 people were arrested for breaking the curfew.

After the curfew had been shortened to the night hours (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) and limited to May 6, it was extended on May 4, 2020 to May 13, 2020.

On May 5, 2020, the curfew was extended to all day again. The borders will remain closed until May 31, 2020, the schools until September 2020.

On May 13, 2020, new regulations were announced. The curfew will initially be shortened to 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. On the occasion of “Labor Day”, there is a curfew from May 24, 2020, 3 p.m. to May 25, 2020, 8 a.m. and from May 25, 2020, 3 p.m. to May 26, 2020, 5 a.m. From May 26, 2020 to May 31, 2020, the curfew is set from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Deaths

There have been nine deaths related to COVID-19 in Jamaica since the first case of infection was upheld.

  • One death on March 19, 2020.
  • Two deaths on April 3, 2020.
  • One death each on April 10, 16, 22, 25, 2020, and May 2 and 5, 2020.
