COVID-19 pandemic in Argentina

The COVID-19 pandemic in Argentina started in early March 2020. The novel disease COVID-19 was first observed in China in December 2019; it has since spread pandemic around the world . COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group . It is considered a respiratory disease . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic .

A nationwide curfew came into effect on March 20, 2020. Since then, the 13 million residents of the greater Buenos Aires area , the corona epicenter of Argentina, have barely been allowed to leave their apartments or houses. Argentina has about 46 million inhabitants.

On August 28, 2020, 392,009 people infected with COVID-19 were registered: 8,271 of them died of or with Covid-19, over half of them in August 2020 alone.

March 2020

On March 3, 2020, the first positive COVID-19 case in Argentina was registered in Buenos Aires . It was a 43 year old who returned from Milan, Italy on March 1st. On March 7, 2020, the Ministry of Health confirmed the country's first COVID-19 death. It was only after his death that he was tested for COVID-19. He was also the first documented death of COVID-19 in Latin America . A nationwide curfew went into effect in Argentina on March 20, 2020.

The Argentine government ( Fernández cabinet ) initially extended exit restrictions until mid-April. On April 10, President Fernández extended exit restrictions in large cities until April 26. They were later extended several times, most recently by two weeks at the end of August 2020. Since the end of August, up to ten people have again been allowed to meet outdoors - with a face mask and a minimum distance of two meters.

April 2020

  • April 1: The Ministry of Health confirmed 79 new cases in Chaco (12), Santa Fe (11), the city of Buenos Aires (10), Santa Cruz (10), the province of Buenos Aires (10), Mendoza (10), Córdoba (6), Neuquén (4), Salta (2), Entre Ríos (1), Corrientes (1), San Luis (1) and Tucumán (1). Six new deaths have been confirmed: a 71-year-old man from the Province of Buenos Aires, the 66-year-old Chilean consul in Santa Fe, a 55-year-old rabbi from the city of Buenos Aires, a 78-year-old man from Neuquén, a 73-year-old Man from Mendoza and a 61 year old woman from the Province of Buenos Aires. The number of cases was 1,133 and the death toll had risen to 33.
  • April 2: 132 new cases were confirmed in the city of Buenos Aires (24) and in the provinces of Buenos Aires (36), Tierra del Fuego (24), Córdoba (16), Santa Fe (8), Neuquén (4), Tucumán ( 4), Chaco (3), La Rioja (3), San Luis (2), Jujuy (2), Entre Ríos (2), Santa Cruz (2), Santiago del Estero (1) and Corrientes (1). Four new deaths were also recorded (a 73-year-old man from Mendoza, a 61-year-old man from Chaco and a 41-year-old man from Buenos Aires Province), bringing the death toll to 37 and the total number of confirmed cases 1,265 has risen.
  • April 3: 88 new cases were confirmed, from the city of Buenos Aires (28) and the provinces of Buenos Aires (22), Córdoba (14), Santa Fe (8), Chaco (8), Entre Ríos (2), Mendoza (2), Neuquén (1), Río Negro (1), San Luis (1) and Tierra del Fuego (1). [76] Five new deaths have been recorded: two men from Buenos Aires Province (87 and 72 years old), a 60-year-old man from Chaco, a 76-year-old Spanish man who lives in Mendoza, and a 53-year-old Woman from the Province of Buenos Aires. As of this date, there have been 1,353 confirmed cases and 42 deaths.
  • April 4: The Ministry of Health announced that 98 new cases from the city of Buenos Aires (34) and the provinces of Buenos Aires (26), Chaco (8), Tierra del Fuego (8), Río Negro (5), Santa Fe (5 ), Neuquén (4), Córdoba (3), La Rioja (2), Santa Cruz (1), Santiago del Estero (1) and Tucumán (1). A 73-year-old man from Buenos Aires Province died, bringing the death toll to 43.
  • April 5: That day, 103 new cases were confirmed and the death toll rose to 48 (two of them died, according to the official health ministry report).
  • April 6: The Ministry of Health announced that 74 new cases had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, bringing the number of confirmed cases to a total of 1,628. Five new deaths have been reported, three men from the city of Buenos Aires, one man from the province of Buenos Aires and another man from Neuquén, bringing the death toll to 53. It was also reported that 325 people have been released to date.
  • April 7: 87 new cases and seven new deaths were reported, bringing the total cases to 1,715 and the death toll to 60.
  • April 8: President Fernández announced that the mandatory quarantine would be extended beyond April 12, with only a few activities "made more flexible". The Ministry of Health confirmed 80 new cases and five new deaths; the number of confirmed cases rose to 1,795, the number of deaths to 65 and the number of recoveries to 358.
  • April 9: The Ministry of Health announced that 99 new cases had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 1,894. 14 new deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 79 and recoveries to 365.
  • April 10: 81 new cases and three new deaths were reported, bringing the total cases to 1,975 and the death toll to 82. During the night, President Fernández confirmed that the lockdown in the larger cities will be extended until April 26th and that the flexibility of the restrictions in areas with lower risk will be analyzed.
  • April 11: That day, 167 new cases were confirmed by the Ministry of Health, the highest to date, and the death toll rose to 89.
  • April 12: The Ministry of Health announced that 66 new cases had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, bringing the number of confirmed cases to a total of 2,203. Five new deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 94 and recoveries to 467.
  • April 13: The Ministry of Health named 2,272 infected (plus 69), 98 dead (plus 3) and 514 recovered.
  • April 14: 2,432 cases (plus 160) and 105 deaths (plus 7).
  • April 15: 2,560 cases (plus 128), 112 dead (plus 7) and 595 recovered.
  • April 16: 2,658 cases (plus 98), 122 deaths (plus 10).
