COVID-19 pandemic in Suriname

The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in Suriname since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic , which took place in December 2019 in China originated. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

The so-called backtrack route between Guyana and Suriname was closed on March 2, 2020 . Originally the closure was for a week, but has been extended until further notice.

On March 13, 2020, the first COVID-19 disease was confirmed in Suriname. It was a person who had traveled from the Netherlands several days before the positive test. As a result, the country announced that its borders and all airports will close at midnight on March 14. In the WHO situation report, the first case of the disease appeared for the first time on March 16, 2020.

On March 16, all schools were closed to prevent further spread.

The country's hospitals only have 30 ventilators. On March 16, staff at St. Vincentius Hospital complained about a lack of medical equipment to adequately treat COVID-19 patients.

On March 28, President Dési Bouterse announced restrictions and a partial curfew between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. The measures were supported by various peoples and indigenous people.

The Minister for Trade, Industry and Tourism, Stephan Tsang, warns of difficult times at the beginning of April 2020. The country was already in a financial crisis before the COVID-19 pandemic, made worse by a rating from Standard & Poor's.

The first COVID-19-related death in the country occurred on April 3, 2020. This fatality first appeared in the WHO Situation Report on April 7, 2020.

On April 6, a specialized Covid-19 ward was opened at Wanica Hospital in Lelydorp.

On April 8, the National Assembly declared a state of emergency. The state of emergency will come into effect for three months, unless the National Assembly extends the duration once for a further three months.

As of April 19, 2020, ten COVID-19 cases and one COVID-19-related death in Suriname were confirmed by the WHO.

On May 3, 2020, the last active case of COVID-19 in Suriname recovered, making it one of the four countries, alongside Papua New Guinea , Belize and Mauritius , which currently has no active case of COVID-19.
