The COVID-19 pandemic has been occurring in Romania since February 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic .

The COVID-19 pandemic began in the People's Republic of China in December 2019 . The novel respiratory disease COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group . On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the event as a global pandemic .

The first case was discovered in Gorj County on February 26, 2020. A man had contact with an Italian who had entered the country.

After Romania was initially not severely affected by the pandemic, the death toll rose especially from April 2020. From May, Romania became the Eastern European country with the most corona deaths per million inhabitants, ahead of Moldova , North Macedonia and Slovenia . On May 19, 2020, Romania had 59 deaths per million inhabitants. Three months later, 3196 fatalities as a result of COVID-19 disease are recorded in Romania, and another 497 patients are in intensive care units (as of August 21, 2020).

Preventive measures

On January 22nd, 2020 the Romanian government decided which six hospitals are to be considered as reception centers for Covid-19 patients: There are infection clinics in Iași, Timisoara, Constanța, Cluj and two clinics in Bucharest: INBI “Matei Balș” and SCBIT “Victor Babes ”. All international airports have received thermal scanners to make it easier to find sick patients with a body temperature of more than 38 degrees. An internal ministerial commission to monitor and manage possible infections with Covid-19 was formed. Specialists from the health, foreign, interior, transport and telecommunications ministries are involved. Medical care was guaranteed around the clock at all airports. All passengers with symptoms are examined. Sufficient protective material for doctors and airport employees was made available. A questionnaire for all passengers was provided.
