The Zumstein winery is a German winery in Bad Dürkheim in the Palatinate wine-growing region . The winery is a member of the Bioland association . Some parts of the winery are under monument protection.

history

The foundation stone for today's winery was laid in 1415, which at that time was an oil mill with a nail forge. In 1765 the family named Zumstein from Arosa ( Switzerland ), who immigrated via Alsace , took over the winery and gave it the name that is still valid today. In 1860, Johann Georg Zumstein laid out today's rock cellar. Based on the economic success that the family had with the winery, the manor villa, which is the headquarters of the winery, was also rebuilt. During the Second World War, residents found shelter in the rock cellar in the two tunnels, both of which were dug 100 meters deep into the mountain. Today, at a constant temperature of 12 ° C, it is used to cool the wines during the fermentation process and can be viewed.

Due to the lack of a successor in the family, the winery was sold to master winemaker Dirk Renzelmann in 1988.

Sustainable management

Since 2010 the vineyards have been converted to sustainable cultivation and organic fertilization. This includes the supply of rock flour, greening the vineyards for natural cultivation of the soil, foliage work for natural fertilization or sensitively used spraying of the vines with exclusively sour water. Zumstein has been certified with the organic quality seal since 2019 and is a member of the Bioland association .

Wines

The winery is located on the German Wine Route in Bad Dürkheim in the Pfalz wine-growing region . With vineyards in Bad Dürkheim, Leistadt and Wachenheim, the following grape varieties are grown on their own vineyards: Dornfelder , Cabernet Dorio , Cabernet Sauvignon , Pinot Noir , Riesling , Sauvignon Blanc , Chardonnay , Portugieser and Gewürztraminer . The winery produces sparkling wines, rosé wines, white wines and red wines. All wines have been certified organic since 2019.
