Berta Schäfer (politician)

Berta Schäfer (born March 17, 1902 in Essen , † September 26, 1977 in Berlin-Lichtenberg ) was a German politician (KPD).

Schäfer attended girls' middle school in Dortmund for four years. After finishing school, she worked as a telephone operator from 1916 to 1919 and did an economics apprenticeship for a year. From 1925 to 1929 she was employed as a telephone operator in the Hotel Fürstenhof in Dortmund. Schäfer joined the KPD in 1932 and was taken into protective custody a year later because she refused to reveal the addresses of illegal comrades. Between August 1934 and December 1935 she was punished for preparing high treason. She was arrested in October 1942 and charged shortly afterwards. She was charged with listening to illegal radio and was sentenced to five years in prison. In March 1945 she managed to escape from a labor camp at the Lübeck women's penal institution. After the end of the Second World War, she became a member of the appointed Hanover State Parliament, to which she belonged from 23 August to 29 October 1946.
