The large Bertelsmann Lexikothek (also The large Bertelsmann Lexicon Library or simply the Bertelsmann Lexicon ) is a German-language multi-volume reference work published by the Bertelsmann Verlag 's Lexicon editorial team with additional subject-oriented volumes. It replaced the four-volume Bertelsmann Lexicon. A special feature of this encyclopedia in many editions was that this work was mostly published as a complete work at a certain point in time and was not delivered in volumes over several years. In terms of marketing, Bertelsmann Verlag tried to present this fact very early on as a unique selling point compared to other lexicon providers.

The concept

The Bertelsmann Lexicon in 7 volumes and 12 supplementary volumes, edition from 1966
The Bertelsmann Lexikothek in 26 volumes: The Bertelsmann Lexikon in 10 volumes and 16 supplementary volumes, in the 1983 edition

The concept of the Bertelsmann Lexikothek can be illustrated well with the following marketing page from the publisher from 1967. Under the title “Being in the picture - being educated!” The publisher writes: “In the history of reference works, the GROSSE BERTELSMANN LEXIKON-LIBLIOTHEK represents something new. It remedies the shortcomings of the old-style lexicon and encyclopedia by providing precise keyword information and so that it corresponds to the desire for quick orientation, but at the same time creates the opportunity to work out the knowledge areas in their entirety. The division of the library into “Lexicon” - “Educational Book” - “Topic Volumes” corresponds exactly to the widespread need today to revisit an educational project that has been postponed due to lack of time at the right opportunity and to acquire the material in peace. ”To illustrate this publisher's concept is the edition of 1966 with their lexicon and themed volumes as well as the educational book and the world atlas documented below:
