The Vocational College West in Essen 's Frohnhausen district is a vocational school in the commercial and technical field.

history

In 1921 the school was started as a school for industrial professions in Essen-West . First and foremost, it served the training of workers and employees of the Krupp cast steel factory located to the north at that time .

In the years 1939 to 1941, at the time of National Socialism and the Second World War , today's large brick building of what was then the industrial school was built. In 1941, classes began there. The Kriegsmarine and Friedrich Krupp AG supported the construction of the school, with Krupp also maintaining offices in the building.

Extensive, partly two-story air raid shelters down to a depth of twelve meters were built under the school building and the school yard, which not only served the school. Today one floor of it is still accessible, and most of the former entrances, which also reached north to the former Krupp cast steel factory , are bricked up.

A first Allied air raid in September 1942 destroyed part of the building, and reconstruction began immediately. After further destruction during the war, in September 1948 the councilors and Lord Mayor Gustav Heinemann personally started cleaning up the rubble in front of the industrial school, today's vocational college west. The vocational school students took over this work later.
