Beryl was a open source - compositing and window manager , which the through OpenGL accelerated X server Xgl or OpenGL accelerated X extension AIGLX used. It was a spin-off from Compiz , which arose because some developers were dissatisfied with its development. It offers Linux users a desktop environment with elaborate 3D effects. The official Beryl distribution was Sabayon Linux . At the beginning of 2007 the project was abandoned because the Compiz and Beryl developers agreed to merge their projects again. The Beryl core has been completely abandoned and replaced by the Compiz core. The Beryl plugins were ported to Compiz and now form a project called Compiz Fusion , which added additional effects and functions.
history
After the release of Compiz by Novell , some developers opened their own development branch called compiz-quinn , which included ever larger changes that can no longer be returned to the original Compiz without considerable effort. Beryl relies on beryl-settings (formerly csm ) to manage its settings, Compiz, on the other hand, relies on the Gnome tool GConf . In addition, from the Beryl developers' point of view, Compiz is largely developed behind closed doors, which the Beryl developers did not like.
The first public version of Beryl was 0.1.0 and was released in September 2006.
On April 6, 2007 the reunification of Compiz and Beryl was announced. The merger came about because the two development branches Compiz-Extra and Beryl pursued almost identical goals and were structured similarly . In addition, both projects use an almost identical program core and the same plug-ins . The name of this reunited project is " Compiz Fusion ".
