The Beth Sholom Congregation is a Jewish community in Elkins Park , Montgomery County , Pennsylvania . Your synagogue is the only one built by architect Frank Lloyd Wright .

history

The community was founded in 1919. Andrea Merow has been the rabbi there since 2004.

The Beth Sholom Synagogue was built by Frank Lloyd Wright between 1954 and 1959 and is the only construction project of its kind in his oeuvre. Wright worked closely with the community's rabbi , Mortimer J. Cohen, to build the synagogue . After the death of Wright in 1959 included the American Institute of Architects and the National Trust for Historic Preservation , the Beth Sholom Congregation to its 16 most important buildings in the United States. Wright referred to the building as "shining Mount Sinai, " which points to the sky.

The synagogue was listed as a building on the National Register of Historic Places on March 29, 2007 . On the same day, the Beth Sholom Synagogue was recognized as a National Historic Landmark .
