With a majority of the votes of its members, the works council can delegate further tasks to the works committee, but the works committee may not conclude any works agreements.

Every works council must elect a works committee in a secret ballot if there are nine or more members. The basis for this is § 27 BetrVG . The purpose of the works committee is to shorten decision-making processes and make the works council more capable of acting.

The works committee consists of the chairman of the works council and his deputy as well as other members of the works council, the number of which is determined by the size of the works council.

In Austria, the works committee is the joint representation of the interests of the works councils of workers and salaried employees according to §76 ArbVG, elected by both sides .
