history

The medieval wayside shrine was erected in 1455 in thanks for Christ's help in overcoming the plague epidemics of 1449 and 1452. The prayer column initially stood on the site of what would later become Leipziger Platz, which was located in the area of today's Riebeckplatz, and thus outside the fortifications of the city of Halle . The road from Magdeburg to Halle and further into Saxon used to run there. The location was not far from the urban gallows . The column was used by hikers, carters and delinquents as a place of worship and prayer. It was restored in 1840, first moved to Franckeplatz in 1928 and in 1972 to the green spaces of the Universitätsring - its current location. In 2012 the prayer column was completely renovated.
