Betty Boothroyd
Betty Boothroyd, Baroness Boothroyd , OM , PC (born October 8, 1929 in Dewsbury ) is a British Labor Party politician and was the first " Madame Speaker " in the British House of Commons from 1992 to 2000 .
biography
Before her political career, Betty Boothroyd worked as a revue dancer for the " Tiller Girls ".
She moved to her seat in the House of Commons as a Labor MP for West Bromwich on May 24, 1973. In the 727-year history of British parliamentarism , she succeeded Bernard Weatherill on April 29, 1992 as the first woman to be speaker and thus to chair the Appointed House of Commons. She held this office until her resignation on July 14, 2000. He was succeeded as Speaker of the House of Commons by the Scottish Labor MP Michael Martin .
She was then raised to the rank of nobility for life by Queen Elizabeth II as Baroness Boothroyd , of Sandwell in the West Midlands (Life Peer) and has since been a crossbencher member of the British House of Lords .
Betty Boothroyd is Chancellor of the UK Open University .
